Republican 8th Congressional District candidate Jim Bognet has gained some major insider help as he tries to raise enough money to offer a real challenge to U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright.

On Monday, Donald Trump Jr., the president’s son, named Bognet his “candidate of the week,” according to a news release from the Bognet campaign.

“Proud to endorse Jim Bognet for Congress in PA-8. He will stand with my father to Make China Pay and send Pelosi packing as we flip this seat to turn NEPA Red Again!” – @DonaldJTrumpJr

In a pinned tweet on his Twitter, the president’s son says of Bognet: His opponent is a far left (House Speaker Nancy) Pelosi pawn. Jim will fight to bring jobs back from China, secure the border, protect the 2nd Amendment & stop the dem plan to defund the police.”

Bognet said he’s honored by the endorsement of “a relentless fighter for the conservative movement” who knows “that Northeast PA is Trump Country and a must-win for Republicans this November.”

Bognet also got the endorsement and an appeal for money to support his campaign by Henry Olsen, a conservative columnist for The Washington Post and a senior fellow at the conservative think thank, the Ethics and Public Policy Center. Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum used to work there.

Olsen wrote a column published Monday about Bognet.

The column’s headline: Republicans must win this seat to have any chance of retaking the House.

Bognet, who did a good job raising money for his six-person race for the Republican nomination, has a lot of work to do to catch up financially to Cartwright. The Moosic Democrat, part of the House Democratic leadership, has 10 times as much money left as Bognet.
