The Republican majorities in the Pennsylvania legislature cannot help themselves when it comes to enacting laws for the sake of political convenience. In 2019, the party almost unanimously backed a new law allowing widespread use of mail-in ballots, figuring it would make voting easier for seniors, a key part of the party’s base. Fast forward a year, and these same actors are whining about mail-in ballots, which as it happened were central to Joe Biden’s presidential victory.

Jump to 2021, and the GOP wants Pennsylvanians to clip Democrat Tom Wolf’s pandemic-power wings through a pair of constitutional ballot measures. One has to wonder what song they’ll sing should the tables turn, leaving a Republican executive to face a Democratic legislature during a time of crisis.
