A note of thanks to all of you who responded to my Sunday column about Paulie’s passing with love, grace and empathy. I was a little embarrassed by how hard I was taking his death and expected to be ridiculed for writing a eulogy for a cat.

What I could not expect was the overwhelming support and kindness I received, particularly from those who know the pain of saying goodbye to a family member who passes suddenly, or must be let go as a final act of love and mercy.

Your understanding and sharing of your own losses helped me bear mine, and I am profoundly grateful. You taught me a valuable lesson in the value of shared experience and the power of empathy to soothe even the deepest ache. I am not alone in my grief. I knew that, but it’s easy to forget in the wake of loss.

Thanks for the reminder. I will never forget it.
