The same Senate and House Republican “patriots” who conducted 10 “investigations” into the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi now stand against any closer look at the Jan. 6 domestic terrorist attack on the Capitol and the Constitution they so slavishly claim to revere.

The insurrection was incited by a mobster president desperate to cling to power and his minions in right-wing media. It was carried out by a mob of Cult 45 and QAnon faithful who worship an obese, incompetent malignant narcissist as the savior of a nation he would gladly burn to the ground to save his own scaly hide.

This much we knew the day of the insurrection. What GQP “leaders” like Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy don’t want the world to know is to what degree Republican officials were complicit in the attack and how involved the White House was in planning it and stalling the response of Army National Guard troops to restore order.

In the wake of the siege, both McConnell and McCarthy blamed the former president for inciting the attack by lying about the results of the presidential election, which Joe Biden won fair and square by 7 million votes. Now, they are both against an independent, bipartisan probe to uncover what’s still unknown, clarify and record what is known and identify solutions for preventing a similar attack (or attacks) the next time the GQP gets shellacked in a free and fair election.

McConnell and McCarthy have moved on. Their sole focus is the 2022 midterms, in which the GQP could recapture the Senate and House as long as Republican voters reward them for burying the truth about Jan. 6. This depth of cynicism is standard for this duplicitous pair, but I wonder whether any rank-and-file Republican voters are troubled by the assumption that they will be willing accomplices in service of The Big Lie.

Where do everyday Republicans — particularly those insisted the Benghazi “probes” were righteous and necessary — stand on getting to the bottom of Jan. 6? Do they care at all about learning the truths of America’s darkest day since 9/11?  Or do they share the obvious fear of McConnell and McCarthy — that getting to the bottom of 1/6 means exposing the GQP bottom-feeders who made it happen?
